Getting Started with Python

Join us for this introduction to Python, a free and open source programming language that is popularly used for data analysis, software development, and many other tasks. We will cover the fundamentals of working with Python, including:

Where and how to run Python
How to create and use variables
Understanding lists (a basic Python data structure)

This workshop is designed as a hands-on introduction for anyone who is interested, and requires no previous experience with Python or with programming in general. We will be using Dartmouth’s Open OnDemand (OOD) platform to run Python using Jupyter Notebooks. If you would like to use the same tool, please come with an active Dartmouth HPC (Discovery) account so you’re ready to log in. If you don’t have one yet, please request an HPC account the day before the workshop.

If you have another preferred way of accessing Python (eg. Google Colab or an installed version on your computer), you are welcome to use that. All three options will provide a similar experience once we begin coding. Please contact the instructor ahead of time with any issues.
