Writing Advice for Interesting Times
By K. Anne Amienne and Daniela Blei | Inside Higher Ed
Amienne and Blei offer five practical strategies to help scholars overcome summer writing slumps and stay motivated in uncertain times:
- Find Your Why
Reconnect with the deeper purpose behind your writing. Shift your focus from external rewards (like tenure or praise) to intrinsic motivation, such as how your work can impact others or advance important ideas. - Turn Anxiety Into Excitement
Reframe pre-writing nerves by saying “I am excited” to transform anxiety into anticipation. This cognitive trick can also help with boredom or fatigue and is more effective when shared with a writing partner or accountability buddy. - Lead With Identity
Define yourself as the kind of writer or academic you aspire to be. (“I am the kind of academic who…”) This identity-based approach, drawn from James Clear’s Atomic Habits, helps form sustainable writing habits. - Get Inspired
Seek out academic role models who embody your values and style. Analyze how they integrate research, writing, teaching, or activism—and keep books or articles nearby that reflect the voice or structure you hope to emulate. - Celebrate Your Achievements
Mark every writing milestone—submissions as well as acceptances. Sharing even small wins reinforces motivation, activates your brain’s reward system, and reminds you that the writing process itself is worth celebrating.
